Veolia Transport at the opening of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference

Veolia Transport, with UITP (International Association of Public Transport), TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) and GTZ, the German technical cooperation, launched the initiative "Bridging the gap: Pathways for transport in the post 2012 process" to include land transport in the agenda of the international climate negotiations held in Copenhagen on December 7-18.

On this subject, Veolia Transport and its partners organized one of the first side events of the Climate Change Conference, on Monday 7 December.

Its purpose: for the next agreement on climate change to include for the first time the reduction in CO2 emissions in the transport sector as a common stake for developed and emerging countries.

Indeed, the transport sector is a significant contributor of greenhouse gases. It accounts for 19% of global CO2 emissions and 14% of greenhouse gas emissions. Road transport, and mainly private cars, is responsible for over 70% of the sector's carbon footprint.

In addition, the highest increase in greenhouse gas emissions between 1970 and 2004 was observed in the energy production (+145%) and transport (+120%) sectors (source: GIEC, 2007).

Other strong messages defended by the initiative in Copenhagen

The need to reform the current carbon finance tools and to provide adequate financial support to low-carbon transports. Similarly, it would be useful to facilitate technology transfers and efforts to reinforce the capabilities to promote sustainable mobility.
