In the United States, 20 greater Los Angeles districts came together to create their own public transit system, delegating the transit authority function to Veolia Transport. Though the system will be entirely private, it will be overseen by government authorities. Our role is to prepare strategy decisions for approval by a board of directors made up of elected officials and to choose the system's operator. Following a call for tenders, operation of the system was awarded to a private operator.

Veolia Takes On a Transit Authority Role
Buses with next-generation batteries in Los Angeles
In Summer 2010, Veolia Transportation will team up with Foothill Transit to begin providing an Ecoliner all-electric bus service in Los Angeles. Built by Proterra LLC, the vehicles feature batteries that can be recharged to 95% capacity in under 10 minutes, independent of any driver input. Freed of the need for overnight battery charges, the new vehicles will ensure an uninterrupted daily service. Initial tests will be conducted using three buses over a two-year period before the project is expanded further. The 314 Foothill Transit buses currently cover 526 square kilometers in the Pomona and San Gabriel valleys in Los Angeles County, carrying 15 million passengers a year.
