Veolia Transport has harvested the first fruits of a growth strategy that in 2005 won the company its largest contract worldwide, namely the operation of the entire Melbourne commuter rail system, as well as two significant bus companies in Brisbane and Perth on the east and south-west coasts of the country, respectively. In Melbourne, the ridership on the commuter rail system increased in 2005 by 6% to over 147 million passengers.
In Sydney, Veolia Transport has renewed the Metropolitan Bus Service contract for the next seven-year period; this involves 220 employees and 140 vehicles in the city's southern urban area in the State of New South Wales.
