In 2005, all contracts that reached their term were renewed, with an increase in scope on the order of 15%. The public authorities of Greater Roanne (Loire) awarded the contract for management of its urban transit system - seven bus lines and three million passengers per year - for a seven-year period starting on January 1, 2006. Veolia Transport was selected on the basis of its simplified proposal regarding the network of routes, timetables and fares plus the creation of an innovative transportation-on-demand service that was more cost-effective.

The year also saw the start of international rail freight activity. The subsidiary Veolia Transport Cargo won its first two industrial tenders for transportation of freight between France and Germany by rail.
