Urban Ferry Service
A high performance integrated ferry service
Challenge
Styrsöbolaget has been operating ferries between the mainland (Göteborg) and the archipelago since 1922: The ferry traffic is an integrated part of the city's public transportation system. One of the challenges is to maintain excellent performance and customer satisfaction levels.
Over 5000 island inhabitants rely on the service for their day to day activities and the archipelago is a popular tourist destination.
Objectives
- To increase traffic volume with the same quality of service delivered focusing on issues of safety, efficiency, environment and health.
- To develop the ferry service and the travel experience in a way that is attractive to passengers as well as the public transportation authority.
- To find solutions to the fast growing harbor traffic with double ended, bicycle and environmentally friendly ferries.
In the 2010 passenger satisfaction survey, 90% rated the service excellent/very good.
Veolia Transport's solution
- Introduce two new HSC carbon fibre catamarans in 2010 to improve services for people living on islands in the archipelago by raising commercial speed from 12-13 knots to close to 30. The lower weight gives positive properties such as lower fuel consumption and small wake generation.
- Lower the overall fuel consumption and increase a sustainable fleet efficiency.
- Propose to extend the archipelago network to the city center with fast ferries to reduce travel time by 25%.
- Develop a new type of double-ended ferry for the harbour operation with a strong environmental profile and designed to carry many bicycles.
