Delivering sustainable transportation

Challenge

  • Contribute to a national strategy for a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
  • Partner the province in the achievement of Green Public Procurement initiatives. 75% of local government spending must be sustainable.
  • Manage a transit system with a guarantee that all transportation modes are coordinated.

Objectives

  • Optimize network design and management.
  • Attract more passengers.
  • Improve environmental performance.

75,550 tonnes of Co2 avoided in 2010.
A 45% increase from 2009.

Veolia Transdev's solution

An efficient and attractive system

  • A network redesign specific to the territory and its population densities, with a clear focus on intermodality between train, bus and transport on demand.
  • In Maastricht, an environmental analysis helped map emissions and develop a local action plan to reduce them.
  • To ensure new ridership and underline the attractivity of the system to new users, several measures were taken: real-time passenger information at over 700 stops, clear signage and new station design, in-bus information screens, and a customer mobility center.

Result: Improved operational performance, reinforced frequency throughout the system and greater environmental efficiency.

50% increase in bus+train passengers since 2005.

Low density transit solutions

In peri-urban areas, inhabitants can call upon our more responsive, more environmentally-friendly on-demand service. 584 vehicles are managed and dispatched from a centralized customer care center.

Result: 3.7 million reservations a year.

Clear ecological impetus: the largest "green" fleet in the country

All buses comply with EEV (Environmentally Enhanced Vehicles) standards, part of the largest "green" fleet in The Netherlands. Euro 4 standard diesel trains are complemented by new electric train sets to limit energy consumption.

Environmental innovation

Over 488 bus stops are equipped with solar panels, powering real-time passenger information. In Maastricht, Veolia Transdev is piloting hybrid bus technologies. The vehicles show results of 20-30% reduction in CO2 and a 40-50% reduction in NOx emissions.

Eco-driving

All drivers follow specific training to reduce energy consumption as well as our impact on the environment and provide a smoother, greener ride for passengers.
