Lignes d'Azur
A sustainable network for the green city of the Mediterranean

Challenge

  • Accompany authorities in the delivery of an ambitious political vision for mobility.
  • Reduce the number of private vehicles in central Nice - a city of historical, touristic and commercial importance.

Objectives

  • Partner with NCA in the creation of an attractive and sustainable transportation network founded on rigorous analysis.
  • Develop an innovative and environmentallyfriendly image for passenger transportation.

8% modal shift from car users thanks to an improved mobility offer.

Veolia Transdev's solution

Carbon Audit - a tool for informed political decision-making

In partnership with NCA and the French energy agency ADEME, Veolia Environnement participated in complete audit of carbon emissions in the city; a first for a French city of over 500,000 inhabitants. The results have provided a foundation for major environmental, energy and transport policy decisions.

Network efficiency

To prepare for the arrival of a new light rail, an in-depth network analysis provided key data to help local authorities identify opportunities to improve environmental efficiencies and optimize the network redesign process.

Remove congestion from the city center

  • Four Park & Ride sites with an integrated ticket for both parking and public transportation are managed in conjunction with the "Lignes d'Azur" system.
  • Introduction of an entirely new fleet of electric car-sharing vehicles to encourage new mobility patterns.

Result: An integrated transportation network adapted to passenger flows and more efficient travel for the citizens of Nice.

An efficient park and ride network: 528,750 less vehicles in the city center and an equivalent of 630 tonnes of Co2 avoided per year.*

*Internal reference calculation based on a 100 place Park and Ride (2,5 km from the city center): 50,000 vehicles per year connected to a high frequency public transportation.

Green infrastructure

Conform to the latest environmental standards, Veolia Transdev collaborated in the design and construction of a green depot for the city's light rail. Technical and maintenance activities on site are also ISO 9001 certified.

Result: 70% water savings by using recycled water to clean vehicles and reduced energy consumption.

Eco-driving

Training programs are developed and followed by our drivers to provide a greener, safer and smoother ride to passengers.

Innovative fuels

In collaboration with Veolia Environmental Services, Veolia Transdev buses in Nice use a bio-diesel mix based on cooking oils collected as waste. This inventive solution maximizes resources and reduces emissions.

Result: A 25% reduction in CO2, 75% less particle emissions and a 10% reduction in NOx.

Educate and inform

Communications campaigns underlining the ecological benefits of using public transportation are conducted across the region - allowing citizens to make an informed and responsible modal choice.

ISO 14001 certification for the entire network and ISO 9001 for the bus & tram depot.
