To deal with the increase in mobility demand and preserve the French Riviera city's quality of life, Nice Côte d'Azur launched a light rail project to join the north and east of the city through the downtown area. This system gave a new dynamic to the transportation policy of the territory and provided a unique opportunity to rethink the city including new pedestrian corridors, historical areas revitalization and a new parking policy.

Transforming mobility
Challenge
Objectives
The light rail is the central point of the whole network. It must be efficient and seamless in order to quickly attract new customers.
In this context, the Transit Authority required the operator to facilitate access to the light rail from various areas of the city by developing and managing easy connections between the light rail and other modes of transportation.
34% increase in ridership across the whole network in the first year of operation, 25% of whom were entirely new public transit customers.
Veolia Transdev's solution
High performance
A 24/7 cutting edge operational center of 28,000 m2 includes a high tech control room and handles maintenance, traffic management and security operations. Experience gained from the Rouen and Saint-Etienne systems was leveraged to train 199 employees.
ISO 14001 certification for the entire network and ISO 9001 for the bus & tram depot.
State of the art of intermodality
- Veolia Transdev experts redesigned the entire network to create an easy, connected passenger experience. The new system provides direct light rail and bus connections and an average waiting times of 5 minutes in peak hours.
- Total integration of four Park & Rides with direct connection to the light rail provide quick and easy access to the city center and combined Park & Ride/light rail tickets.
- Management of the design and implementation of multimodal information panels on board, and 1,400 bus and tram stops in Nice are equipped with NFC tags, 2D flashcodes and SMS services to multiply the ways passengers choose to receive their information.
- An intelligent trip calculator provides real-time itineraries and information online and for mobile Internet.
- A free, high-end mobility application for smartphones, allowing users to locate, plan and supplement their trip.
- Launch of a fleet of 1,750 bicycles, available across 175 distribution points - and in 2011, an entirely electric car-sharing fleet.
"NF" quality certification of the light rail and the centrally-located mobility agency.
Integration into the life of the city
- Various interactive points have been set up in the city: a customer mobility center, four commercial agencies and two minibuses are dispatched to provide passenger information at key locations.
- Its environmental performance - entirely electric, quiet, autonomous battery system - allows the light rail to pass through two listed public squares.
- More than 14 artworks made by 15 international artists embellish the light rail's urban route.
8% modal shift from car users thanks to an improved mobility offer.
