TCAR
A history of innovative transportation

Challenge

  • Make public transportation a key driver in achievement of "Agenda 21" climate change objectives.
  • Accompany Rouen Metropolitan Area's strong ambitions for a green energy mix and lower transportation emissions.

Objectives

  • Develop an attractive and efficient transportation network to incite modal shift in the city for citizens and tourists.
  • Application of new sustainable fuel solution for the bus fleet.
  • Provide measurement tools to drive environmental performance.

60% increase in ridership across the network over 10 years.

Veolia Transdev's solution

Network development and reorganization

Accompany city decision makers in redesigning the network of bus, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and light rail to reduce emissions and better serve passengers.

Result: The development of an optically-guided, high-frequency system and 2,550 net tonnes of CO2 avoided per year on three BRT lines.

Our expertise in alternative fuels

Veolia Transdev accompanied the local authority in extensive assessment of alternative fuel solutions to reduce emissions - including procurement and maintenance costs. 70% of the fleet now uses bio-diesel sustainable fuels.

Result: 15% less emissions and 30% less fuel consumption.

A major actor in facilitating environmental behavior

  • In January 2009, we introduced flexible rental plans for a fleet of 350 bicycles, including a selection of electric bikes, in order to encourage new sustainable mobility solutions.
  • TCAR contributes to numerous city-wide and regional initiatives to raise environmental awareness. For example, Veolia Transdev helps ensure that the Rouen Armada - which attracts 10 million visitors over ten days - is an "eco-event".

Result: 155% increase in ridership during the event; high integration with Park & Ride facilities.

A journey by light rail in Rouen emits 21.5 times less CO2* emissions than the same journey in a private vehicle.

* Eco-efficient Travel indicator.

Change the urban landscape

The Rouen light rail system has helped to "green" the city. Urban space reclaimed by the tracks is landscaped with turf and expanded pedestrian crossings.

Result: New pedestrian spaces, improved accessibility and 15,000/m² of reclaimed green spaces.

Energy saving

Rouen light rail vehicles are equipped with electricity saving braking technology.

Result: 80% of electrical braking energy is recuperated.
