Urban/Suburban Bus Network
A public transit system custom-designed for the world's entertainment capital

Challenge

Las Vegas is the world's entertainment capital, welcoming more than 37 million visitors each year. Most tourism activity is concentrated in the Las Vegas Strip, an 8-mile corridor of casinos and resorts with around-the-clock activity. Heavy volumes of pedestrian and auto traffic create an extremely congested environment.

The Las Vegas region is also one of the fastest growing areas in the United States. For the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), a major challenge is meeting the ever-increasing demand for more service in the city and surrounding areas in the valley.

Objectives

  • Provide an efficient, modern public transit service that seamlessly meets the varied needs and expectations of Las Vegas residents and visitors.
  • Deploy innovative technology and advanced service concepts.
  • Ensure outstanding quality maintenance on a diverse fleet of transit equipment.

Veolia Transport's solutions

Maintain safe, efficient, courteous service

  • Continue the outstanding performance of the Deuce service, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the "Strip." Maintain the Deuce's outstanding service frequency - in peak periods, a bus comes as frequently as every 7 minutes.
  • Continue to foster a customer-focused culture with "Going for Green," Veolia Transportation's breakthrough customer service program, which was rated as Excellent or Very Good by 98% of Las Vegas drivers.
  • Motivate staff, develop loyalty and promote excellence through incentives such as the Million Miler Awards Program, which recognizes operators who have driven one million miles (the equivalent of 12 years) safely without a preventable accident.

The Deuce service on the Las Vegas Strip carries more than 1 million passengers every month.

Community leadership and engagement

  • Increase the level of field operations supervision in accordance with growth in fleet and ridership.
  • Effectively deploy GPS technology to enhance safety and on-time performance.
  • Help RTC launch an innovative barrier-free fare collection system, where passengers purchase tickets from automated vending machines off-board and then board buses quickly though all available doors.
  • Perform maintenance around the clock to ensure that all vehicles are always in excellent operating condition.
  • Train operators in techniques of green driving and fuel conservation.

Continuously improve operations

  • Sensitivity training provided to employees.

The RTC bus system has been ranked as one of the most efficient and cost-effective large urban bus services in the United States.
